October is Eczema Awareness Month, and Charlotte dermatologists appreciate this kind of dry skin care campaign. We believe that proper knowledge empowers our neighbors who are affected by eczema to take control of their health, while raising awareness in our community.

What is eczema

Eczema is a condition in which patches of skin become inflamed; leaving itchy, red, and cracked. In severe cases, blisters may sometimes occur. There are several types of eczema that affect nearly one-third of the people in the United States. The most common form of eczema is called atopic dermatitis. “Atopic” is a collective term for a number of diseases that involve the immune system, such as atopic dermatitis, asthma, and hay fever. Many people outgrow the condition, while others will need to deal with this health issue throughout adulthood.

Signs and symptoms

The signs and symptoms of eczema can vary from person to person. Atopic dermatitis is very common in infants. In fact, most people develop atopic dermatitis before the age of 5 years. Many adults must manage this condition, their symptoms are often different from those experienced by children. There is no cure for eczema; but it is common for the condition to be characterized by periods where their symptoms flare up or worsen, followed by periods where their symptoms will improve, clear up, or go into remission.

What are your options?

If you suspect that you may have some form of eczema, it is important to make an appointment with a board-certified dermatologist. Even though the condition itself is not yet curable, your Charlotte dermatologist can recommend a number of treatments and medications for each person’s particular skin condition. Even when it appears that an area of skin has healed, it is imperative to maintain dry skin care, as it can easily become irritated again.
