Dry skin care tips to help all year-around

Dry skin care

Dry skin care can be simple

Dry skin care is not only effective in helping to resolve fine lines and wrinkles, it can help you avoid itchy, flaky, cracking skin. Dry skin is a common condition that can affect anyone at any time of the year. Dermatologists can recommend bathing and skin care tips to help you get dry skin relief. Once it is resolved, dermatologists recommend the following to prevent its return:

Don’t let baths and showers make dry skin worse:

  • Bathe or shower with the door closed.
  • Limit your time in the shower or bath to 5minutes.
  • Use warm water, never hot water.
  • Use fragrance-free, dye-free cleansers.
  • Apply cleanser sparingly; avoid using so much that you create a thick lather.
  • Dab your skin gently when drying with a towel.
  • Apply plenty of moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
  • Use an ointment or cream rather than a lotion.
  • Look for a cream or ointment that contains a natural oil such as olive oil, jojoba oil, or shea butter.

Tips for other parts of the body:

  • Carry a non-greasy hand cream and apply it after each hand washing.
  • Choose a lip balm that feels good on your lips, avoid any product that stings or tingles.
  • Stop using deodorant soaps, even if its only under your arms.
  • Avoid skin care products that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid.
  • Wear gloves whenever outdoors in winter, or when you perform tasks that gets your hands wet.
  • Avoid handling chemicals, greases, and other substances on your hands.
  • Choose “free and clear” laundry detergent.
  • Wear cotton or silk under clothing made material that feels rough.
  • Stay warm without standing directly in front of a fireplace or other heat source.
  • If the air in your home is dry, condition the air with a humidifier.

Visit your dermatologist

If these tips do not help resolve your dry skin issues, it is advised that you see a dermatologist. Your condition may require a prescription ointment or cream. Your dermatologist can determine what is necessary to improve your condition.
