How does my Charlotte dermatologist feel about self-tanning?

Tanning misconceptions

Dermatologists collectively cringe when they hear the false adage, “It is better to tan than burn.” Tanning is the body’s way of responding to the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Being in the sun exposes us to two types of UV rays: ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Both types play a role in causing premature skin aging and skin cancers. Tanned or not, sunlight exposure is continued exposure to radiation, and that is always bad for skin. More than 90% of skin cancers and premature aging is caused by damage from sun exposure. A single session in a tanning bed can increase your risk of developing melanoma by 20%.

Sunless tanning in Charlotte

People who want to avoid exposure to the sun’s damaging rays, but still want to look tanned, resort to the use of sunless tanning products. We want to help you understand how these products work and the importance of applying them properly. Self-tanners are commonly sold as lotions, creams and sprays that you apply to your skin. Spray-on tanning is also professionally available. The active ingredient in most self-tanning products is a color known as DHA. This color agent reacts with dead cells in the skin’s surface layer to temporarily simulate a tan. The coloring usually wears off after a few days.

Tips for applying a self-tanner

Consider the following tips that can help you apply a self-tanner to achieve even coverage and longer-lasting results:

  • Use a washcloth to exfoliate your skin before you apply a self-tanner. The goal is to remove build-up of dead skin cells. Be sure to thoroughly exfoliate areas where your skin is thickest; on the elbows, knees, and ankles.
  • Dry your skinbefore applying a self-tanner to allow for even coverage.
  • Apply the self-tanner on the arms, then legs, followed by the torso.
  • For even coverage, massage the self-tanner into your skin in a circular motion.
  • To avoid orange colored palms, wash your hands with soap and water after each section.
  • For a natural look, you need to lightly blend the tanner from your wrists to your hands and from your ankles to your feet.
  • Dilute the self-tanner to be applied on the knees, ankles, and elbows because these areas tend to absorb more color than the rest of the skin. To dilute the application, simply rub the areas with a damp towel or apply a thin layer.
  • Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed and try to avoid sweating for 3 hours after application.
  • Apply an SPF 30 or higher sunscreen that provides UVA and UVB protection every day.

As long as used as directed, topical sunless tanning products are generally considered safe alternatives to sunbathing.
