Skin care and cosmetics in Charlotte NC: the ugly side of beauty products

Skin care and cosmeticsCosmetics and skin care

Skin care and cosmetics are often grouped together as beauty products. But did you know that the cosmetics you enjoy could actually work against your skin care routine? Do you even know what’s in the products that you put on your face daily? It is best to look at your skin care routine holistically, and make sure that your favorite products are working together to give you the best skin possible.

The ingredients, age, and quality of your cosmetics all play a part in the effect that they have on your skin. Being an educated consumer and evaluating these factors can help you choose the most beneficial products. Your Charlotte dermatologist can also help review and recommend the best products for your specific skin needs.

Negative impacts from cosmetics

There are a variety of skin care woes that can be caused from impure cosmetics or improper use of beauty products.

  1. Acne- Have you ever had a breakout after using a new foundation or powder? Some cosmetics contain oils that can wreak havoc on acne prone skin. To be safe, look for cosmetics that are marked non-comedogenic. If you are very prone to breakouts, try patch-testing new products in an inconspicuous spot (such as beneath your ear) before starting to use them full time.
  2. Dryness- One the flip side, some cosmetics that don’t include oils may have alcohol or other ingredients that are extremely drying to your skin. Increased dryness can actually exacerbate signs of aging. If you struggle with dry skin, look for cosmetics that are lightly moisturizing.
  3. Clogged pores- When makeup and debris settle in pores and clog them, it can make them appear larger. Low quality makeup, wearing too much makeup, and not completely removing makeup at night all contribute to clogged pores.
  4. Irritation or rash- In some cases, low quality makeup or cosmetics with harsh ingredients can cause skin irritation, rash, or even an allergic reaction. If this happens to you, discontinue use of the product immediately and contact your dermatologist.
